The remote stores, were already in operation (without EPOS) and already had links back to the head office server via VPN (Virtual Private Network) over ADSL connectivity, a task previously undertaken by ourselves to allow general communications for e-mail, web access etc. The ground work already carried out here would make the RMS system integration relatively simple. The software installations, point of sale terminals and data migration were the main issues remaining.
It was decided to use existing PC terminals operated by mouse & keyboard with barcode readers for EPOS data entry. If necessary “touch screen” displays could be added later. Initially a simple user interface would be adopted for the store terminals (for sales items entry) this could be improved if required in the future. Cash draws and credit card facilities would also be needed.
